Hybrid CPP Propulsion Systems

Brunvoll Hybrid CPP Propulsion Systems use two or more power sources – typically a diesel engine and a frequency-controlled electric motor, optionally with battery packs, gas engines or permanent magnet motors – to drive controllable pitch propellers. This lets ships with variable power requirements run at high propeller efficiency across a wide power range.

System build

• Brunvoll gearboxes with multiple PTO/PTI options, or twin-in single-out gearboxes
• Configurations from simple single-screw systems to complex multi-mode arrangements
• Example: two CP propellers, each driven by a "father and son" main engine pair on a twin-in single-out gearbox, plus a combined generator/electric motor on each gearbox for PTO/PTI
• Tailor-made to the vessel's operating profile with diesel, electric, battery or gas power sources

Operating modes

• Diesel-mechanical (DM) with PTO: the engine drives the propeller and a PTO generator that feeds the ship's grid, charges batteries or drives a hydraulic pump
• Diesel-electric (DE) / PTI: generator sets power the electric motor, ideal for slow steaming; reduces fuel use and main engine running hours, and also serves as Power Take Home (PTH)
• Boost: diesel engine and electric motor (fed by gensets or batteries) together deliver maximum propulsion power, allowing a smaller diesel engine and saving fuel, engine room space and CAPEX

Battery integration

• Reduced fuel consumption and main engine running hours, and therefore maintenance
• Higher redundancy and smoother genset/main engine operation
• Peak shaving from batteries instead of starting an additional auxiliary generator
• PMS/EMS stores excess generator power in batteries and optimises the number of running generators
