Controllable Pitch Propellers
Tailor-made four-bladed Brunvoll controllable pitch propellers, hub 520–1,950 mm, diameters up to 9,000 mm, 500–20,000 kW, with optional nozzles, feathering and hub-servo (ECP) systems.
Description
Brunvoll Controllable Pitch Propellers are designed for each individual ship for optimum propeller efficiency with low vibration and noise. Blade angle varies from full ahead to full astern, allowing the relation between rpm, pitch and power to be optimised.

Design principles
- Designs based on hydrodynamic theory, tank tests and CFD
- Diameter, pitch, rpm, skew and load distribution selected for efficiency and noise/vibration characteristics
- Blades machined, polished and statically balanced to ISO tolerances
- Interchangeable, self-lubricating, wear-resistant blade bearings
- Certificates from any major classification society, up to the strongest arctic ice class requirements
- Compliance with US EPA VGP2013, DNV Clean and DNV Clean Design requirements
Configurations
- CP system: push-pull rod from the hub pitch mechanism through the propeller shaft to a servo piston in the gearbox or shaft line
- ECP system: servo piston in the propeller hub, low-pressure oil supplied from the gearbox oil distribution or a separate OD-box; recommended for shafts over 20 m or highly loaded propellers
- Feathering: blades can be set in line with the water flow, allowing one propeller to be shut down in twin-screw systems and maintenance at sea of one shaft line
- Nozzles: blades replaceable inside the nozzle; DL1 "Dragless", HE, 19A and 37 profiles. A ducted propeller gives up to 30% higher thrust at low speeds than an open propeller.
