CRP Contra Rotating Propellers

Brunvoll contra-rotating propeller (CRP) system for single-screw vessels: two fixed pitch propellers on a shaft-in-shaft arrangement driven by electric motors; estimated power savings of 6–20%.

Description

Brunvoll CRP Contra Rotating Propellers are an electric propulsion system for single-screw vessels. Two fixed pitch propellers are individually driven by electric motors through a shaft-in-shaft system, recovering part of the slipstream rotational energy lost with a single propeller. Potential savings are assessed at 6–20% of power consumption, with an average of 13%.

Design

  • Different blade numbers on the two propellers to avoid vibration problems
  • Smaller aft propeller diameter to stay within the slipstream contraction of the forward propeller
  • Can be driven by any type of electric motor; optionally configured with other prime movers, e.g. a combination of electric motors and combustion engines
  • Blade designs customised to the ship

Standard series

Off-the-shelf standard configurations comprising two asynchronous electric motors with variable frequency drives, standardised gearboxes, propellers with predefined diameter and rpm, and the BruCon Remote Control and Monitoring System.

Shaft and gearbox arrangement

  • Outboard shaft seals comply with DNV Clean Design notation as standard
  • Mitchell tilting-pad propeller thrust bearings integrated in the gearbox
  • Stern tube with oil-lubricated white metal bearings
  • Monitoring system for the contra-rotating bearings
  • Low-noise lubrication oil pumps
  • Oil purifier in addition to the gearbox oil filter system as standard

Applications

Single-screw vessels, e.g. platform supply vessels.
