Hydrogen, Battery and Hybrid Ship Conversion

Turnkey retrofit of diesel-generator vessels to hydrogen, battery or hybrid propulsion: data logging, feasibility, design, class approval, integration, commissioning and after-sales service.

Description

eCap Marine provides ship conversion to hydrogen, battery or hybrid propulsion for existing vessels with diesel generator-based propulsion. The actual power requirement is determined by data logging, an operating profile is created, and a cleaner drive system is designed and delivered as a plug-and-play solution.

Scope

1. Feasibility study – requirements, data recording and analysis, drawing review, retrofit option comparison (CAPEX/OPEX), regulatory alignment with class leading to Approval in Principle

2. Technical concept and design – technical description, general plan, single line diagram, hazardous area plans, HAZID workshops, design freeze

3. Project management – procurement, engineering and construction, system integration, commissioning

4. Final approval and after-sales – sea trial, crew training, maintenance and remote monitoring

Reference: offshore supply vessel Coastal Liberty

Retrofit and hybridisation of an OSV in Cuxhaven with an H2PowerPac and H2 tank systems, which received DNV case-by-case approval in February 2024. The system provides emission-free extended propulsion in the Wadden Sea and includes power management, cooling, fire extinguishing and safety systems.

  • 20 ft H2 Power Unit: 2 × 200 kW fuel cell systems, 400 kW add-on battery buffer, 12 t
  • 10 ft H2 tank system (ADR approved): 200 kg CH2 at 380 bar, swappable, 5,000 kg

The concept is scalable from smaller inland vessels up to megawatt-size systems for larger commercial ships.
