Wärtsilä Full-Electric Vessel Solutions
Battery-powered full-electric propulsion solutions for short-route vessels such as ferries, tugs and inland waterway vessels, including swappable containerised batteries and shore charging.
Description
Wärtsilä full-electric vessel solutions power propulsion and auxiliaries entirely from batteries, with no internal combustion engine on board, enabling zero-emission operation. Electric propulsion system efficiency can reach 90%. Because batteries are heavy, full-electric drive suits short, predictable routes; hybrid solutions are better for longer distances.
Applications
- Ferries: regular short crossings with limited turnaround time; onshore energy storage can buffer weak grids for high-power charging. Projects include Molslinjen ferries built by Incat, the RoPax ferry China Zorrilla (Buquebus) and two Boreal Sjö double-ended shuttle ferries
- Tugs: typical 3–4 hours at sea with short bursts of high power in heavy assist and enough time at dock to charge
- Inland waterway vessels: swappable containerised battery packs charged along the waterway and exchanged during stops
What to evaluate
Route length, access to charging and the power demand profile.
