Brunvoll starter cabinets for constant-speed asynchronous electric motors driving thrusters and CP propellers: star-delta, auto-transformer, electronic soft starter and frequency converter types.
Description
Brunvoll Starters for Electric Motors are starter systems for constant-speed asynchronous electric drive motors, tailored to thruster and controllable pitch propeller applications. Motors are started with the propeller in zero pitch position.
Starter types
- Direct on-line (DOL): contactor and protection device; full line voltage applied at start
- Star-delta: reduced voltage at start, in-rush current reduced by approx. 60% compared with DOL
- Auto-transformer: stepped reduced voltage, typically 50–70% motor voltage at start; with a 50% tap the motor draws about 25% of the DOL current
- Electronic soft starter: thyristor-based voltage ramp for smooth, surge-free torque increase; produces some harmonic distortion
- Frequency converter: full speed and torque control with reduced in-rush current and lower generator load at start; 6-pulse, 12/24-pulse or Active Front End (AFE) rectifiers – AFE gives sinusoidal current without a transformer
