Upgrade and retrofit service for Brunvoll propellers, gearboxes, thrusters and control systems, including hybrid PTO/PTI conversion, EAL upgrades, combinator mode, re-blading, class notation changes and control system renewal.
Description
Brunvoll Upgrade & Retrofit extends the life of Brunvoll propellers, gearboxes, thrusters and control systems and adapts them to new operation profiles, ownership, technology or class requirements. Brunvoll engineers analyse the vessel's energy consumption for different configurations and recommend upgrades to improve efficiency, reliability and safety.
Propulsion and gearbox upgrades
- Energy consumption analysis of alternative system configurations
- Propeller design evaluation for improved efficiency
- Rebuilding the gearbox arrangement into a hybrid system with PTO/PTI unit
- Increased bollard pull
- Change of classification society notation
Thruster upgrades
- EAL upgrade using a split solution approved by VGP 2013: a small amount of EAL in the outer barrier, with drive-line components lubricated by mineral oil
- Combinator mode (variable pitch and rpm) to reduce energy consumption and wear
- Upgrades to meet a new class notation
- Power and control system upgrades to true redundancy, typically for DP notations
- Re-blading for efficiency and comfort
Control system upgrades
- Replacement of obsolete electrical parts and software
- New functionality such as DP, joystick and autocrossing
- System log functionality for troubleshooting; online support

On the fishing vessel Atlas Cove, a retrofit with a bespoke Brunvoll multi-step gearbox, reduced main engine power and a variable frequency PTO gave a 37% fuel saving in 2019 and 45% in 2020 compared with pre-refit consumption.
