Marine Balanced Rudder

Balanced rudder with 20–40% of blade area forward of the stock, reducing steering gear torque by 30–50% vs unbalanced rudders; for bulk carriers, tankers, container and cargo ships.

Description

The Marine Balanced Rudder from Misea Marine is a ship rudder with 20% to 40% of its blade area forward of the rudder stock axis. Water pressure on the forward part offsets much of the torque from the aft blade, reducing the load on the steering gear.

Key features

  • Streamlined blade contour to limit resistance and vortex formation
  • Rudder stock in high-strength marine alloy steel; welded and reinforced blade-to-stock connection
  • Semi-balanced and fully balanced configurations
  • Corrosion-resistant materials for blade and stock

Performance (manufacturer figures)

  • Steering gear working torque reduced by 30% to 50% compared with unbalanced rudders
  • Propulsive efficiency indirectly improved by 2% to 4%

Applications

Bulk carriers, oil tankers, container ships and general cargo ships; also medium-sized passenger ships, ro-ro ships and engineering vessels.
