Diesel Engine Driven Tunnel Thruster
Tunnel thruster powered by its own marine diesel engine, independent of the ship's electrical grid; gear transmission, controllable pitch propeller, for large cargo ships, tankers, ferries and offshore vessels.
Description
The Diesel Engine Driven Tunnel Thruster uses a dedicated marine diesel engine instead of an electric or hydraulic motor, so it does not rely on the vessel's main power grid. It is installed in a transverse tunnel at the bow or stern and provides continuous lateral thrust for positioning, lateral movement and turning on the spot.
Construction
- Marine-grade diesel power unit
- Gear transmission with full oil-immersion lubrication and circulating cooling
- Controllable pitch propeller with skewed blades to limit cavitation, vibration and noise
- Tunnel in high-strength marine steel with optimized blade-tip clearance
- Modular design: engine, transmission and propeller can be removed and serviced separately
- Interface for connection to the ship's monitoring system
Key features
- Operates when the main power system has failed or is heavily loaded
- Suited to low-temperature and polar conditions as well as tropical waters
Applications
- Bulk carriers, oil tankers, large ferries
- Offshore supply vessels, construction ships and wind farm maintenance ships, including DP operation
