Bow Thruster

Bow-mounted tunnel thruster with bronze or stainless steel bidirectional propeller, electric or hydraulic drive, and bridge control with stepless speed and direction switching. Fixed and retractable types.

Description

The Bow Thruster is a transverse propulsion unit fitted in the forward hull, producing port or starboard thrust so the bow can be moved and positioned at low speed or alongside, without main engine or tug assistance. It is used on vessels from yachts to cargo ships and offshore vessels.

Construction

  • Transverse through-hull tunnel with protected openings
  • Bidirectional propeller in corrosion-resistant bronze or stainless steel
  • Electric or hydraulic motor drive
  • Bridge control with stepless speed regulation and instant direction switching

Configurations

  • Electric: simple installation and low maintenance; for yachts, fishing boats, inland cargo ships
  • Hydraulic: higher thrust density and overload resistance; for ocean-going container ships, bulk carriers, platform supply vessels
  • Fixed tunnel or retractable (retracts to reduce resistance; for fast cruise ships and yachts)

Maintenance

  • Regular cleaning of tunnel fouling
  • Electric models: motor temperature, insulation and control checks
  • Hydraulic models: oil changes and pipe tightness checks
