Battery Electric Propulsion System

Zero-emission battery-electric propulsion with shore charging, frequency converters, energy and battery management, NMC or LFP batteries and single or dual motors, for ferries, tugs and short-sea cargo vessels.

Description

The Berg Propulsion Battery Electric Propulsion System replaces combustion machinery with energy stored in an onboard battery system that powers the propulsion motors, onboard services and auxiliary loads. The vessel recharges in port via AC or DC shore power, making it well suited to captive or fixed-route operations. It is available for newbuilds and retrofits.

System elements

  • High-efficiency frequency converters supplying the electric propulsion motor
  • Energy management system coordinating propulsion, onboard services and auxiliary loads
  • Battery management system monitoring temperature, charging and operating limits
  • Compatible with DC grid architectures and integrable with a hybrid propulsion system for extended range

Configurations

  • Battery chemistry: NMC for high-power demands such as rapid manoeuvring, or LFP for safety, stability and long-term cost efficiency
  • Air- or water-cooled frequency drives
  • Single or dual electric motors for redundancy, class or manoeuvring needs
  • Battery capacity, charging setup and control stations sized to route and charging frequency

Benefits

  • Zero-emission operation supporting IMO and regional regulations
  • Lower lifecycle cost through simplified machinery and reduced maintenance
  • Low noise and vibration; high torque at low speed for precise manoeuvring

Applications

  • Ferries on commuter routes with scheduled charging windows
  • Short-sea cargo vessels on fixed coastal loops
  • Tugs and harbour craft
