Fuel Electric Propulsion System

Genset-based electric propulsion with power management, frequency converters or DC hubs and AC or DC grid, driving CPP, FPP, azimuth or tunnel thrusters; for vessels with variable loads and high redundancy needs.

Description

The Berg Propulsion Fuel Electric Propulsion System uses combustion engines running as gensets to generate electricity, which powers electric propulsion motors and hotel loads. A power management system runs only the gensets needed, keeping engines in their most efficient load range – an advantage for vessels with large variations in power demand.

System elements

  • Gensets driven by diesel, LNG, methanol or other combustion engines
  • Electric propulsion motors driving controllable or fixed pitch propellers, azimuth thrusters or tunnel thrusters
  • Power and energy management optimising which gensets run and at what load
  • Frequency converters and drives, or DC hubs
  • Bridge interface; control via Berg MPC with EMS and PMS

Configurations

  • AC or DC onboard grid
  • Inline or geared motors, permanent-magnet or induction, air- or water-cooled
  • Single or twin-shaft motor arrangements; optional batteries for peak shaving or hybrid operation
  • Ready for future fuel engines

Benefits

  • Flexible machinery placement without shaft alignment constraints
  • Reduced fuel use, CO₂, NOₓ and SOₓ emissions; lower noise and underwater radiated noise
  • Redundancy through multiple gensets and multi-motor layouts
  • Fewer genset running hours and lower maintenance

Applications

Tankers, ferries, yachts, offshore supply and support vessels, ice-class ships, naval and research vessels, tugs and cargo vessels, especially those with DP work, frequent manoeuvring or low-noise requirements.
