Water-Lubricated Shaft Seals: Lip, Face and Gland

Teignbridge water-lubricated propeller shaft seals in three types: lip seals for light-duty pleasure craft, face seals for heavier medium-pressure duty on larger vessels, and gland (stuffing box) seals for working and fishing boats.

Description

Teignbridge supplies three types of water-lubricated propeller shaft seal: lip seals, face seals and gland seals. All three need a water supply during operation.

Lip seal

A spring-supported rubber ring with a lipped profile, held in a housing, that runs on the shaft.

  • Use: pleasure craft; light duty, low-pressure sealing at low cost
  • Needs little attention beyond keeping the water supply on
  • No built-in backup. Classification societies require an emergency backup seal, usually inflatable
  • The ring needs replacing more often than other seal types and wears a groove in the shaft, so a replaceable liner sleeve is recommended

Face seal

Two parts with polished faces: one rotates with the shaft and the other is stationary. A rubber sleeve or gaiter presses them together.

  • Use: larger vessels; heavy duty, medium-pressure sealing
  • Lasts longer than a lip seal
  • Some versions have no backup seal. The faces can stick when idle, so some makers recommend moving the seal before rotating the shaft

Gland seal (stuffing box)

A housing with a recess holding coils of packing, compressed onto the shaft by a pusher.

  • Use: working and fishing boats; heavy duty, medium to high-pressure sealing
  • Generally considered the safest type, and no emergency backup seal is required
  • Packing is replaced at long intervals and needs occasional adjustment
