RENK KAZ Propeller Shaft Disconnecting Device

RENK KAZ clutch that disconnects the main engine from the shaft line so an electric PTH drive can bring the ship home; sizes 28–71, clutch torque 220–4,500 kNm, self-lubricating.

Description

The RENK KAZ propeller shaft disconnecting device is a clutch that ensures the safety-critical function of an electric PTH (power take home) drive on ships powered by diesel, gas or electric main machines. If the main machine is damaged, the KAZ disengages it from the rest of the shaft system, and the electric machine (otherwise used as a PTO generator or PTI booster) takes over to bring the vessel to port.

When open, the KAZ acts as a combined support and axial bearing, routing propeller thrust into the motor's stationary thrust bearing; when closed, it rotates without friction or wear as a rigid part of the shaft line. On vessels with two independent propulsion lines, it lets a defective line windmill freely with reduced resistance.
