Adaptive Fuel Line for Biofuels
Alfa Laval Adaptive Fuel Line: a modular, automated fuel handling platform for FAME-based biofuel blends, combining fuel conditioning modules, ALCAP separators and real-time control for multi-fuel operation on existing diesel engines.
Description
The Alfa Laval Adaptive Fuel Line is a modular fuel handling platform designed to let ships run FAME-based biofuels and blends in existing diesel engines. It manages fuel conditioning, temperature regulation, water removal and contamination control, with real-time automation that adapts to changing fuel qualities.
Why biofuels need dedicated handling
Since the 2024 revision of ISO 8217, FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) is permitted as a blending component in marine gasoil and residual fuels, with blends from 7% to 100%. FAME behaves differently from fossil fuel:
- Degrades through oxidation and biodegradation, typically if stored beyond three to six months, forming gums, sediments and microbial contamination
- Attracts water, encouraging microbial growth and tank corrosion
- Can crystallize into wax at temperatures as high as 10°C, e.g. in double-bottom tanks
- Heating prevents wax formation but accelerates oxidation, so temperature must be balanced
Key components
- Fuel Conditioning Modules (FCM) – regulate temperature and viscosity so fuel entering the engine meets specification regardless of blend ratio or fuel type
- ALCAP™ separators – remove water and impurities before the engine
- Automation and real-time control – sensors and control algorithms adjust treatment parameters based on actual fuel conditions, including when switching fuels
- Engine management integration – communicates with the vessel's engine management to optimize combustion during fuel transitions
Key features
- Supports multi-fuel operation rather than a single fuel specification
- Retrofit-compatible with existing installations with only minor modifications
- Upgradable platform: software, sensors and mechanical elements can be adapted as fuels evolve
- Backed by Alfa Laval service support and drydocking upgrades for biofuel compatibility
Note: methanol and ammonia fuel systems require different onboard equipment and are not covered by ISO 8217.
