RENK IFPS® Front-End Shaft Generator

RENK IFPS® (Integrated Front-End Power System) is a PTO shaft generator flanged to the front end of the main engine crankshaft, for up to 2,500 kW electric power; approved by Everllence and WinGD and suited to retrofits.

Description

The RENK IFPS® (Integrated Front-End Power System) is a PTO shaft generator mounted directly on the front end of the main engine and connected to the crankshaft, rather than on the propeller shaft. It is approved by Everllence (formerly MAN) and WinGD and is intended for vessels needing up to 2,500 kW of electric power.

Key features

  • Compact footprint: requires 2 frame widths instead of the typical 4, usually allowing the main engine to move about 1.6 m further aft
  • No separate foundation; reduced shaft alignment and installation effort
  • Flexible coupling absorbs engine vibration, followed by a single-stage RENK gear
  • Rugged permanent-magnet generators; modular layout with access through the front cover
  • Multiple generators – one can be serviced while others keep supplying power
  • Generator efficiency beyond 97%, with higher efficiency at 40% main engine power than propeller-shaft systems
  • Active front-end (AFE) frequency converter delivers a clean sinusoidal current with very low THD
  • Island-mode operation as well as parallel operation with gensets

Retrofit

No work on the propeller shaft is needed, and the compact units are easy to bring into the engine room, making the IFPS® well suited to retrofitting ships in service, including for EEXI compliance. It also supports EEDI improvements on newbuilds.

Scope of supply

Delivered as a complete package: mechanical connection to the main engine, gear unit with coupling, generator package, transformer and frequency converter cabinet – from main engine to main switchboard.
