Mega-Guard Energy Management System

Mega-Guard EMS controlling energy source selection, power limits and battery charging for full electric, serial hybrid and parallel hybrid ship propulsion over a redundant Ethernet network.

Description

The Mega-Guard Energy Management System (EMS) from Praxis Automation Technology is the control core of a Mega-Guard electric propulsion installation. It selects electric energy sources automatically in full electric, serial hybrid and parallel hybrid configurations.

Key features

  • Limits power to the electric propulsion motors to avoid overloading the energy storage and/or DC bus generators
  • Controls battery charging from DC bus generators or shore power
  • Redundant Ethernet connection to Mega-Guard high power inverters (propulsion motor, steerable POD, DC bus generator, AC grid generation, shore power, DC/DC and electric fin stabilizer drives) and to energy storage with built-in BMS
  • Independent EMS per propulsion side (portside and starboard), each with a 5.7" touchscreen operator panel with built-in controller and mode selection pushbuttons
  • Project-specific control strategy programmed in IEC 61131
  • Operator panel in metal-front (commercial ships) or glass-front (mega yachts) versions

Integration

  • Works with the Mega-Guard Propulsion Control System, which automates bridge remote control of electric propulsion motors and, in parallel hybrid plants, the combustion engine with automatic changeover
  • Can be extended with Mega-Guard vessel management, power management, fire alarm, navigation, heading control, dynamic positioning and other systems
