Steerable Thruster

360° azimuth (steerable) thruster in Z-drive or L-drive configuration, with bevel gears, hydraulic worm-gear steering and optional nozzle; replaces propeller-rudder systems on tugs, ferries and DP vessels.

Description

The Steerable Thruster (azimuth thruster) combines propulsion and steering in one modular unit that rotates a full 360° horizontally, delivering thrust in any direction without a rudder. It can be installed at the stern, bow or bottom of the hull.

Construction

  • Z-drive and L-drive configurations
  • Bevel gear transmission from horizontal input to propeller shaft
  • Hydraulically driven worm and worm-gear steering with continuous 360° rotation and angle locking
  • Propeller with optional flow-guiding nozzle
  • Corrosion-resistant marine alloy housings, sealed for submerged operation

Key features

  • Translation, turning on the spot and low-speed station keeping
  • Multiple units can work together for dynamic positioning
  • No rudder, reducing hull resistance
  • Quick-replacement wear parts (gears, seals, hydraulic components); service life stated at over ten years with proper maintenance

Applications

  • Harbour tugs
  • Offshore wind maintenance, cable-laying and crane vessels
  • River cargo and passenger ships, ferries
  • Cruise ships, yachts and research vessels
