Ulstein Hybrid Power System

Ulstein battery hybrid power solution integrated into the ship's central power system, combining battery energy storage, power conversion and energy management for zero-emission mode, peak shaving and spinning reserve.

Description

The Ulstein Hybrid Power solution adds battery-based grid support functions to a ship's central power system, enabling fully emission-free operating periods and reduced fuel use. Its main elements are battery energy storage, power conversion and energy management, integrated holistically with the vessel's existing power systems.

Key functions

  • Flexible power generation – with a variable-speed generator (VSG), engine speed is matched to load demand to raise power system efficiency
  • Zero-emission mode – vessel powered exclusively by the energy storage system; scalable from minutes of harbour operation to longer operations on vessels with predictable schedules
  • Peak shaving – batteries handle fluctuating peak loads, smoothing engine load and avoiding unnecessary start-up of standby engines
  • Spinning reserve – battery acts as redundant reserve power in operations such as DP, allowing safe operation with fewer engines running

Benefits

  • Reduced emissions, and emission-free operation in some modes
  • Lower fuel consumption and operating costs
  • Reduced engine load
