Energy Storage Feasibility Studies

Ulstein feasibility studies evaluating battery energy storage (BESS) for vessels: function, integration point, failure modes, sizing, fuel and emission savings, and cost-benefit.

Description

Ulstein performs feasibility studies as part of its marine advisory to select the best solution with respect to CAPEX, OPEX and environmental impact. A typical example is an energy storage study for integrating a battery energy storage system (BESS) into a vessel’s power system, for newbuilds or retrofits.

Study scope

  • Defining the BESS function: peak shaving, enhanced dynamic performance, spinning reserve, enhanced ride-through for sub-systems (e.g. cranes, thrusters), and power regeneration from mission equipment
  • Determining the physical integration point in the system architecture
  • Failure mode performance across defined error conditions, including mission equipment/ship platform joint errors
  • Required system capacities and capabilities
  • Estimated fuel savings and emission reductions in selected operations
  • Viable configurations and sizes of energy storage
  • Cost-benefit for different levels of system integration
