Tunnel Thruster

Transverse hull-mounted tunnel thruster generating lateral thrust for low-speed maneuvering and berthing; electric or hydraulic drive, fixed or adjustable pitch propeller.

Description

The Tunnel Thruster (also called transverse or side thruster) is an auxiliary propulsion unit installed horizontally in the bow or stern hull. It drives water transversely through the hull to produce lateral thrust, compensating for the rudder's lack of steering effect at low speed and reducing dependence on tugs when berthing.

Construction

  • Transverse cylindrical tunnel with smooth inner wall to reduce flow resistance and turbulence
  • Propeller in fixed-pitch or adjustable-pitch design
  • Drive: electric motor (stable output, low noise) or hydraulic motor (high power density, overload resistance for heavy-duty service)
  • Sealing and anti-corrosion components for seawater service; vibration damping to reduce hull vibration

Operation

  • Propeller reversal switches thrust between port and starboard
  • Operates independently of the main engine, with fast response for counteracting crosswind and current

Applications

  • Container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, passenger and cruise ships
  • Offshore wind service vessels, construction, salvage and drilling support vessels
  • Ferries, workboats and naval auxiliary vessels
  • Single or multiple units in bow and/or stern positions depending on tonnage and duty
