Becker Twisted Fin

Pre-propeller energy-saving device with small flat duct ring and extended fins for container ships and other fast, slender vessels; power savings of up to 4%, no moving parts.

Description

The Becker Twisted Fin® (BTF, also known as the Becker Mewis Duct® Twisted) is an energy-saving device for faster vessels with slender sterns, such as container ships. Installed in front of the propeller, it generates pre-swirl that reduces rotational losses and improves propulsion efficiency, supporting EEXI, EEDI and CII compliance.

Design

  • Smaller, flat-profiled duct ring with much lower drag than the Mewis Duct, plus fins extending from inside the duct
  • The duct ring contributes thrust, stabilises the fins and reduces vibration
  • Custom designed for each hull geometry and propeller; can be combined with a new or existing propeller
  • Meets class requirements for strength, fatigue and vibration
  • No moving parts and no maintenance required

Key features

  • Average power savings of up to 4% for container ships (CFD, model tests and full-scale operation); more when combined with the Becker Twist Rudder
  • Less cavitation and vibration; improved course keeping
  • Suitable for newbuildings and retrofits; retrofit at regular or intermediate dry docks without removing the propeller, typically in five days

Applications

  • Container vessels
  • Gas carriers
  • Ferries and vehicle carriers
  • Navy vessels
