Becker Cylinder Type Steering Gear
Hydraulic cylinder-type steering gear for rudder angles up to ±45°, working torque 100–1,000 kNm, with standardised HPUs and control/alarm system.
Description
The Becker Cylinder Type Steering Gear is a hydraulic ram-type steering gear with a simple working principle, robust against rudder bearing wear, and available with customised actuator sizes for small installation spaces. Becker can supply the complete manoeuvring unit (steering gear and rudder).

- Working torque: 100 to 1,000 kNm
- Rudder angle range: up to ±45°
- Open- or closed-loop hydraulic system with variable displacement pump
- Parametric actuator design; standardised HPUs and control/alarm system
System
- Each HPU has at least one oil tank, electric motor and hydraulic pump; safety valves protect against overload
- Temperature sensor and oil-level switches feed the alarm system; up to two HPUs on one transport grid
- Executes commands from the vessel control system (FFU / NFU / autopilot)
- Alarm and control panels, including one in the engine control room, monitor components and switch HPUs on/off
- Emergency local control from a terminal box near the actuator
