Becker Twist Rudder

Twisted-profile ship rudder that uses the propeller slipstream rotation to reduce cavitation, erosion and drag; options include heel pintle, King Support bearing and rudder bulb.

Description

The Becker Twist Rudder is a rudder with a twisted profile designed to make use of the rotating flow generated by the propeller. The twist prevents low-pressure areas on the rudder surface that cause cavitation and erosion, allows higher rudder angles at higher speeds and reduces rudder drag, recovering losses from the propeller slipstream.

Key features

  • Reduced cavitation and rotational losses
  • Power savings through recovery of propeller slipstream losses
  • Optimised profile for reduced drag
  • Lighter weight with no cast parts
  • Minimised self-induced cavitation, extending rudder life and reducing maintenance

Options

  • Heel pintle and heel pintle bearing – for smaller vessels such as fishing boats, offshore ships, workboats and tugs; the heel pintle arm also acts as a rope guard protecting the rudder from ropes and nets.
  • King Support (KSR) – main neck bearing integrated in the rudder blade, mainly for larger ships with a rudder area over 20 m²; allows slimmer, lower-resistance profiles and lower stresses on neck and carrier bearings.
  • Rudder bulb – reduces the propeller hub vortex to improve propulsive efficiency and reduce cavitation risk.

Applications

  • General cargo vessels
  • Container vessels
  • Ferries and vehicle carriers
  • Passenger vessels
  • Gas carriers
