Mitsui E&S Equipment

Energy-Saving Equipment (VCR, EcoEGR, THS2, Shaft Generator)

Mitsui E&S energy-saving technologies for marine main engines: variable compression ratio (VCR), EcoEGR, THS2 turbo hydraulic waste heat recovery (up to 2% fuel saving) and crankshaft-driven shaft generators.

Description

Mitsui E&S offers a range of energy-saving equipment and technologies for marine main engines to cut fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs.

VCR (Variable Compression Ratio System)

  • Changes the compression ratio to suit engine output and fuel type, improving fuel consumption and reducing CO2
  • Commercialised by Mitsui E&S DU together with licensor WinGD

EcoEGR

  • Combines lower fuel consumption with NOx reduction
  • Engine tuned for best SFOC, with EGR operated in all Tier II and Tier III areas, resolving the usual SFOC/NOx trade-off and improving EEDI
  • Also applicable to dual-fuel engines (except ME-GIE and ME-LGIP)

THS2 (Turbo Hydraulic System) waste heat recovery

  • Recovers surplus exhaust energy from a high-efficiency turbocharger as hydraulic power to assist engine rotation
  • At reduced speed, hydraulic power from the crankshaft supports turbocharger rotation
  • Reduces fuel consumption by up to 2% and improves EEDI
  • Very compact compared with conventional waste heat recovery systems; no major engine room redesign needed

Shaft generator

  • Mounted at the fore end of the main engine crankshaft to generate electrical power
  • Improves EEDI and helps meet tightening regulations
  • Reduces OPEX by avoiding auxiliary generator running (maintenance, SCR urea)
  • Reduces crew workload and makes use of main engines that lead in alternative fuel capability
