Electric Voith Schneider Propeller (eVSP)

Electric Voith Schneider Propeller combining VSP cycloidal propulsion with a gearless, directly integrated permanent-magnet motor from the Voith Inline Thruster, for offshore vessels, ferries and tugs.

Description

The electric Voith Schneider Propeller (eVSP) combines the cycloidal propulsion principle of the Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) with the electric motor of the Voith Inline Thruster. The result is a compact, energy-efficient drive unit that delivers infinitely variable thrust in all directions with high precision, optimized for offshore, ferry and tug applications.

A directly integrated permanent-magnet (PM) motor delivers high torque and fast response without any gears, giving an almost loss-free conversion of electrical power into thrust while keeping noise emissions to a minimum.

Key features

  • Increased overall efficiency with nearly loss-free power transformation
  • Gearless, maintenance-free integrated PM motor for high reliability and low operating costs
  • Minimal noise and vibration; option for silent mount or shock mount
  • Fast acceleration and response for precise, safe maneuvering
  • Fully integrated motor for flexible installation and minimal space requirement
  • Safety for vessel, passengers and environment inherent in the VSP principle
  • Optional Voith Roll Stabilization
  • Optional Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL)

Eight-blade version

An eight-bladed eVSP is available for even quieter and more efficient operation, reducing underwater radiated noise and its impact on marine life. The research vessel Meteor IV is propelled by two eVSPs and a Voith Inline Thruster (VIT).

Applications

  • Offshore and service operation vessels (e.g. Edda Wind)
  • Ferries
  • Tugs
  • Research vessels
