Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP)

Cycloidal propulsion system combining propulsion and steering in one unit for precise, safe maneuvering; used on tugs, ferries, offshore and special vessels. Also available as the electric eVSP.

Description

The Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) combines propulsion and steering in a single unit, enabling precise, safe and highly efficient vessel maneuvering. Based on a design by Austrian engineer Ernst Schneider first tested in 1926 at the Vienna Ship Model Basin, it has been developed by Voith for 100 years.

The VSP principle

The magnitude of thrust is determined by the rotational speed of the rotor disk, while the blade angle determines the direction of thrust. This allows infinitely variable thrust in any direction for precise maneuvering, even under adverse conditions.

Key features

  • Safe and precise maneuvering with fast response time
  • High reliability and low maintenance requirements
  • Low fuel consumption
  • Maximum safety for vessel, passengers and environment through the VSP principle
  • Option for Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL)
  • Compatible with OnCare.Health Marine condition monitoring

Variants

  • eVSP – electric VSP combining the VSP with the gearless electric motor of the Voith Inline Thruster; optimized for offshore, ferry and tug use
  • rcVSP – remote-controlled VSP for remotely operated ship assistance and tug maneuvers

Applications

  • Tugs and ferries (e.g. the Staten Island ferries in New York, launched 2021)
  • Offshore vessels
  • Specialized vessels requiring maximum maneuverability, reliability and safety
