Box Cooler

Kelvion box coolers: U-tube bundles installed in the hull sea chest to cool engines, thrusters, HVAC and hydraulics; round (2–21 m²) and rectangular (9–120 m²) designs for small and medium vessels.

Description

A Kelvion Box Cooler is a vessel cooling system consisting of a U-tube bundle fitted in the sea chest on the side of the hull, saving engine-room space. Sea water enters through an inlet grid, flows along the bundle and leaves through an outlet grid, cooling the water inside the tubes by forced circulation when the vessel is moving or natural convection when stationary.

Configurations

  • Round design – for smaller cooling capacities; 2–21 m² cooling surface; bundle diameter up to about 400 mm
  • Rectangular design – for larger capacities; 9–120 m² cooling surface; bundle width up to about 400 mm, length up to about 2,000 mm
  • Stepped bundles in several sections to follow the hull contour
  • Bundle depths from 400 to 1,800 mm; larger types on request

Cooling duties

  • Main and auxiliary engines
  • Bow thrusters
  • Air conditioning and hydraulic systems

Applications

  • Tugboats, barges, fishing boats, dredgers and supply vessels
  • Ferries, ice breakers, cargo freighters, carriers, tankers and reefers
