ZEM Fuel Systems System / Package
Direct Ammonia Fuel Cells (DAFC) for Maritime Power
Direct ammonia fuel cell systems under development by ZEM Fuel Systems, using high-temperature solid oxide fuel cells to convert ammonia into electricity and water with zero NOx for clean maritime power.
Description
ZEM Fuel Systems is developing direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs) for maritime power with industry partners. Ammonia emits no CO2 when used as fuel and is recognised as an alternative marine fuel for cutting shipping greenhouse gas emissions, especially when produced as green ammonia.
Technology
- High-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) convert ammonia directly into electricity
- Output products are water and electricity only, avoiding the NOx emissions associated with ammonia combustion
