WinGD X-DF-M/E Methanol and Ethanol Engines

WinGD X-DF-M/E two-stroke engines running on methanol, ethanol or blends of both, plus diesel; IMO Tier II in both modes, Tier III with SCR; first methanol engines delivered in 2025.

Description

WinGD X-DF-M/E two-stroke main engines let deep-sea ship owners use green methanol and bio-ethanol, individually or as a blend, alongside diesel. The first methanol-fuelled engines were delivered in 2025; ethanol-capable engines are available for order, with ethanol deliveries for newbuilds and retrofits starting in 2027.

Key features

  • Methanol and/or ethanol operation to optimise cost and emission-reduction pathway
  • Fuels handled onboard without compression or refrigeration, with established port infrastructure
  • IMO Tier II NOx in both diesel and methanol mode
  • IMO Tier III with SCR: high-pressure (upstream of turbocharger), low-pressure (downstream) or on-engine iSCR for single-turbocharger engines
  • Minimum extra CAPEX, high efficiency in both fuel modes, minimal pilot fuel
  • X-DF-M/E engines can be adapted and certified for ethanol (retrofit ready)

Applications

Tankers, container vessels, bulk carriers, multipurpose vessels, gas carriers and PCTCs.
