Contra-Rotating Propellers (CRP)

Steerprop contra-rotating propeller (CRP) azimuth propulsors with two opposite-rotating propellers, up to 13.9% higher efficiency in high ice class and 9.1% in open-water vessels; Z-drive or PM motor drive.

Description

Steerprop Contra-Rotating Propellers (CRP) are azimuth propulsion units with two propellers rotating in opposite directions on the same axis. The aft propeller recovers rotational (swirl) energy from the forward propeller's slipstream and converts it into additional thrust, in a push-pull configuration with full 360-degree manoeuvrability.

Key features

  • Up to 13.9% higher propulsion efficiency in high ice class vessels and up to 9.1% in large open-water vessels versus single-propeller units (based on case studies)
  • 5.6% higher energy recovery compared with a single-propeller unit
  • Load shared between two propellers for cavitation-free operation, lower noise and vibration
  • Up to 100,000 operating hours between overhauls
  • In ice, the forward propeller mills ice before it reaches the aft propeller; directed wash improves ice clearing

Technical data

  • Drive: Z-drive or integrated permanent magnet motor drive
  • Versions: open-water CRP and ice-class CRP

Applications

  • Cruise ships and ferries
  • Arctic and ice-going vessels, ice-going tugs
  • Offshore vessels
  • Naval vessels
