Transverse Thruster

Bow or stern transverse (tunnel) thruster producing bidirectional lateral thrust for docking, berthing and station keeping; electric (variable-frequency) or hydraulic drive, fixed or retractable versions.

Description

The Transverse Thruster, also known as a tunnel thruster, is mounted in a transverse tunnel through the bow or stern below the waterline. By changing the propeller's rotation direction and speed it delivers bidirectional lateral thrust for docking, berthing, position keeping and navigation in confined waters, where the rudder is ineffective at low speed (below about 3 knots).

Construction

  • Through-hull tunnel with smooth inner wall
  • Propeller in high-strength marine-grade alloy with optimized blade curvature, resistant to corrosion and fouling
  • Drive: variable-frequency electric motors (typically small and medium vessels) or hydraulic drive (large offshore vessels, higher instantaneous thrust)
  • Control module linked to the ship's central control, with real-time thrust and direction adjustment, overload protection and fault self-detection

Configurations

  • Bow thrusters, stern thrusters, and mid-hull units on some large engineering vessels
  • Fixed-tunnel type for conventional commercial ships
  • Retractable type that withdraws into the hull at speed to reduce resistance and noise (yachts, special-purpose vessels)

Applications

  • Container ships, bulk carriers, cruise ships
  • Offshore wind maintenance vessels, drilling and engineering vessels
  • Yachts, rescue, patrol and special working vessels
