HiMSEN Dual-Fuel Ammonia Engine

HiMSEN diesel-cycle dual-fuel ammonia engine, 320 mm bore, 720 rpm, 6–9 cylinders inline, 3.6–5.4 MW; type approval tests witnessed by ABS, BV, DNV, KR, LR, NK and RINA. Offered by Hafvik Solutions.

Description

The HiMSEN dual-fuel ammonia engine is a medium-speed engine for carbon-free marine propulsion and power, offered by Hafvik Solutions, which supports owners in evaluating and integrating ammonia propulsion. Hyundai Himsen completed Type Approval Tests for its two dual-fuel ammonia engines across 2024 and 2025, witnessed by ABS, Bureau Veritas, DNV, Korean Register, Lloyd's Register, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai and RINA.

Technical data

  • Combustion: diesel cycle (high-pressure liquid injection)
  • Bore / stroke: 320 mm / 450 mm
  • Speed: 720 rpm
  • Cylinder configuration: 6, 7, 8, 9 inline
  • Cylinder output: 600 kW
  • Engine output: 3.6–5.4 MW

Diesel cycle vs Otto cycle

  • No output de-rating and high efficiency
  • Low N2O and NH3 emissions (no blow-by or slip issues of Otto-cycle concepts)
  • Relatively high NOx, handled by SCR
