Diesel engine driven tunnel thruster with reverse/reduction gearbox, FPP 550–3000 mm, L or Z drive, using Cummins, Weichai, Shangchai or Nantong diesels; class ABS, BV, CCS, DNV-GL, RINA, NK, KR.
Description
The Fountom Diesel Engine Driven Tunnel Thruster avoids the large electrical power demand of electric bow thrusters, along with winding insulation issues and the complexity of electric starting, speed control and reversing.
A horizontally mounted diesel engine with simple fuel-rack speed control drives the thruster through a reverse/reduction gearbox; a Z arrangement adds a bevel gearbox to change the shaft line, and flexible couplings are fitted. The reversing gearbox has ahead and astern clutches whose casings rotate in opposite directions; the engine idles when both are disengaged.
