Davis Gas Turbine Exhaust Cooling
W.R. Davis Engineering exhaust cooling and plume analysis for gas turbine exhaust on offshore platforms, reducing hot plume impingement on derricks, helidecks and occupied areas.
Description
Davis Gas Turbine Exhaust Cooling from W.R. Davis Engineering addresses hot gas turbine exhaust plumes (above 550°C / 1022°F) on offshore oil platforms, which can impinge on drilling equipment, occupied areas or helicopter operations.
Scope
- Prediction of impingement temperatures in sensitive areas over the full range of wind speeds and directions, combined with local wind probability data
- Validated empirical model for buoyant plume trajectories, followed by 3D CFD modelling of the platform for the most critical scenarios
- Evaluation of mitigation options: relocating or raising the stack exit, cooling the exhaust gas, and splitting the plume
- Exhaust gas cooling devices, typically the most cost-effective option
Example: a Gulf of Mexico platform design using exhaust cooling and a two-way plume split, with an 80°C (176°F) impingement limit on the derrick.
