Torqeedo GmbH was founded in 2005 and has its headquarters in Wessling, in the lake district near Munich, Germany. The company describes itself as one of the driving forces in the electrification of the marine sector.

The first product, the Torqeedo Travel outboard, made its debut in 2006 at the boot Düsseldorf trade fair, and in 2008 Torqeedo was named start-up of the year in Germany. Subsidiaries in the United States and East Asia followed. The first motors delivered two horsepower; today the company builds systems of up to 200 kW with matching battery banks.

Torqeedo serves recreational boaters, sailors and commercial operators, with products engineered in Germany and a focus on quiet electric mobility with no exhaust emissions at the point of use.
