Torqeedo VPVC Propeller Technology

Torqeedo's patented variable pitch variable camber (VPVC) propellers optimise pitch and camber for each blade segment, reducing cavitation and turbulence while delivering high thrust for electric boat drives.

Description

Torqeedo VPVC propellers (variable pitch variable camber) apply design methods from modern commercial shipping to Torqeedo's electric boat drives. Instead of keeping pitch and camber virtually constant across the blade, as in conventional leisure propellers derived from Wageningen series tests, pitch and camber are optimised for each propeller segment using vortex-grid calculation and stepwise optimisation over many thousands of iterations. VPVC propellers are a Torqeedo patent.

Key features

  • Pitch and camber optimised to the radial flow conditions along the blade
  • Low turbulence and high thrust, giving additional speed at maximum efficiency
  • Reduced cavitation: high-speed camera tests (1/8,000 s exposure) show only slight tip vortex, versus fluctuating suction-side tip cavitation on a standard propeller at a comparable operating point
  • Larger diameter and slower rotation than a standard propeller for the same propulsive power

Design parameters

Besides diameter and number of blades, the propellers are defined by radial gradients of pitch, chord length, skew, rake, thickness and camber. For variable-pitch blades, pitch is measured on a circle at 70% of the propeller diameter.
