Torqeedo Lithium Battery Technology

Overview of Torqeedo's marine lithium battery range: Deep Blue 80 (LFP, 79.2 kWh) and Deep Blue 40 (LiNMC, 38.0 kWh) high-capacity packs, plus Power 24-3500 and Power 48-5000 low-voltage batteries, all IP67 with redundant BMS.

Description

Torqeedo Lithium Battery Technology covers the lithium battery family used with Torqeedo electric and hybrid boat drives. Torqeedo has developed lithium batteries for marine use since 2005 and uses two chemistries: LFP (lithium iron phosphate) for permanently installed, less weight-sensitive installations, and LiNMC (lithium nickel manganese cobalt) for the highest energy density and discharge rate in portable, integrated and weight-sensitive Deep Blue applications.

High-capacity batteries

  • Deep Blue Battery 80 – LFP battery with 79.2 kWh, cell-to-pack architecture for high volumetric energy density in a compact footprint; ten-year capacity warranty for recreational and commercial use (at least 4,000 cycles @ 75% DoD, 3,750 cycles @ 80% DoD or 3,000 cycles @ 100% DoD, at 25°C); damping kit available for high-shock applications.
  • Deep Blue Battery 40 – LiNMC battery with 38.0 kWh based on BMW i3 automotive battery technology; prismatic Samsung SDI cells in a robust aluminium housing with safety vent; BMS at module and battery level developed to ASIL C; integrated cooling; IP67; rugged design suited to high-speed boats; nine-year capacity warranty for recreational use.

Low-voltage Power batteries

  • Power 24-3500 – lithium-ion battery with 3,500 Wh
  • Power 48-5000 – lithium-ion battery with 5,000 Wh; supplies 48 V loads, or other voltages via a converter
  • Housing and all data connections waterproof to IP67
  • Cooling-system ready and suitable for professional use
  • Isolatable poles for safe transport, installation and long-term storage
  • Integrated BMS with redundant safety, protection and balancing functions; communicates with the Cruise on-board computer

Safety concept

  • Hardware backup for all safety-relevant BMS components
  • Individually welded cells or modules with multiple safety mechanisms (no foil-sealed pouch cells)
  • Cells sourced from manufacturers in Japan and the USA
  • Waterproof to IP67 to prevent BMS corrosion and electrolytic gas formation

Capacity loss over time is about 2–4% per year at 25°C ambient; storage at cooler temperatures is recommended.
