Torqeedo Electric Motor Technology

Torqeedo boat motors are electronically commutated, permanent-magnet excited synchronous motors, typically of external-rotor, radial-flux design, for high torque and maintenance-free operation.

Description

Torqeedo electric motor technology describes the motor design used across Torqeedo electric boat drives, classified by five criteria: frequency characteristics, commutation, magnetic field excitation, structural design and magnetic field direction.

Torqeedo motor design

  • Synchronous motors – motor speed is fixed to supply frequency; torque-controlled, drawing as much current as needed to hold propeller speed, unlike asynchronous motors whose slip increases with load
  • Electronically commutated – alternating field generated by a frequency converter with tailor-made power electronics; no brush wear or brush losses, maintenance-free
  • Permanent-magnet excitation – no losses from an excitation coil, giving lower weight and volume and higher efficiency than electromagnetically excited motors
  • External rotor (typical) – coils inside, magnets on an outer rotating bell, producing significantly more torque than an internal-rotor motor of the same size
  • Radial flux (typical) – magnetic field perpendicular to the rotational axis; avoids the complex 3D flux management of transverse-flux designs

Disc-rotor designs are not used in pylon-mounted outboards because their large diameter prevents direct installation in the pylon.
