Wärtsilä Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) Systems
Customised controllable pitch propeller systems (hub, blades, shafting, hydraulics, controls) from 1000 kW with no upper limit, for ferries, dredgers, trawlers, ice-class and DP vessels.
Description
Wärtsilä Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) systems allow a ship to run ahead and astern without changing the direction of engine rotation, and to match power demand at constant shaft speed. Each system is a customised combination of hub, propeller blades, shafting, hydraulics, control system and accessories, with the propeller tailored hydrodynamically to balance fuel consumption and comfort.
Technical data
- Power range from 1000 kW, no upper limit; hub principles up to 60 MW
- 4- or 5-bladed propellers from 1200 mm diameter
- Bronze or stainless steel propellers
- Hub type D for light and moderately loaded propellers; hub type G for high power or heavily loaded propellers
- Compliant with all ice classes
Configurations
- Reduction gearbox with oil distribution unit at the forward end of the gearbox
- Reduction gearbox producing the hydraulic pressure for pitch actuation
- Direct drive without gearbox
- With integrated gearbox and PTO/PTI it can form a hybrid propulsion system providing power boost and emergency propulsion
Key features
- Tailored to DP and ice-class requirements
- Customised propeller design reduces noise and vibration
- Can comply with EPA Vessel General Permit 2013; available with environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) and a zero-pollution stern tube system
- OPTI Design methodology (CFD-based) optimises propeller–hull interaction
- Control via Wärtsilä ProTouch; EcoControl combinator optimises pitch and engine speed for fuel savings in transit
- Propeller feathering option reduces resistance when a propeller is not in use – for double-ended ferries, twin-screw vessels running on one shaft, vessels with booster propulsors and sailing vessels
Applications
Vessels with varied operating conditions, high power in both bollard pull and free sailing, DP or ice operation, multi-engine or hybrid plants, and frequent port calls – e.g. ferries, dredgers, trawlers and ice-class merchant vessels. Suited to mechanical propulsion with medium- or low-speed engines.
