ULSTEIN® POWER Variable Speed Generator (VSG)

Variable speed generator system that adjusts generator speed to load, combined with battery energy storage and an energy management system, to cut fuel use, emissions and engine maintenance.

Description

The ULSTEIN® POWER Variable Speed Generator (VSG) is a marine power generation system that adjusts the generator’s rotational speed to match real-time load, instead of running at constant speed. It includes an advanced load sharing strategy between fixed and variable speed generators operating in parallel, and combines a low voltage AC solution with power conversion and energy storage.

Key components

  • Variable speed generator adapting rotational speed to demand
  • Battery energy storage providing instant power for dynamic loads
  • Control and energy management system monitoring generator speed and energy storage

Benefits

  • Lower fuel consumption and emissions
  • Stable power supply during peak demand or generator fluctuations
  • Reduced mechanical stress on the diesel engine; potential to increase time between services by 50-70%

Applications

  • Offshore DP vessels such as SOVs, subsea and support ships
  • Expedition cruise vessels
  • Aquaculture vessels with highly variable power demand

Reference

Operational data from the CSOVs Olympic Notos and Olympic Boreas; Olympic Boreas achieved nearly 50% lower fuel consumption compared to other CSOVs, attributed to the overall ship design, technical measures and power system.
