Saltfoss seaMSR-100 Molten Salt Reactor

The seaMSR-100 is a molten salt reactor delivering 100 MW electric or 250 MW thermal, operating at about 650 °C and near-atmospheric pressure with 24 years of operation without refueling.

Description

The Saltfoss seaMSR-100 is a molten salt reactor delivering 100 MW electric or 250 MW of high-temperature thermal power, designed for floating deployment on the Saltfoss Power Platform. The fuel is dissolved directly in a fluoride-based FUNaK salt that also carries the heat and retains fission products.

Key features

  • Fuel dissolved in FUNaK salt: no fuel rods, so a conventional meltdown cannot occur
  • Near-atmospheric operating pressure: no stored pressure energy to drive an explosive release
  • Passive safety: in an abnormal event the salt drains automatically into dedicated tanks where it cools and solidifies, without human or mechanical intervention
  • Most fission products retained in the salt as fluoride compounds; noble gases captured continuously by an off-gas system
  • Low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel in the thermal neutron spectrum, using the existing global fuel supply chain
  • Chemistry control to minimize corrosion over the reactor lifetime

Technical data

  • Output per reactor: 100 MW electric or 250 MW thermal
  • Operating temperature: approx. 650 °C (salt boiling point approx. 1,600 °C)
  • Operating pressure: near-atmospheric
  • Refueling interval: 24 years
  • Platform configurations: 100-600 MW electric or 250-1,500 MW thermal, or cogeneration

Applications

  • Electricity generation from floating power platforms
  • High-temperature process heat for industrial sectors that are hard to electrify
