Høglund Power Fault Control (PFC)

Hoglund

Fast-acting power system monitoring and protection overlay that detects and isolates single-point faults that could trip power generation and thrusters on vessels with electric station-keeping thrusters.

Description

Høglund Power Fault Control (PFC) is a fast-acting monitoring and protection solution using advanced, multi-variable protection functions to detect and isolate faults with a high degree of reliability and precision. Developed together with ShoreConnection, it has been delivered to vessels worldwide since 2004.

How it works

  • An overlaying, complementary system: it does not replace traditional electrical protection devices or alter existing protection, though some protection settings may need adjustment.
  • Detects possible single-point power failures that can lead to a common-source trip of power and propulsion.
  • Based on system variables normally available in power generation and distribution systems for ships with variable-speed, electrically driven thrusters for station keeping.
  • PFC software modules can run in separate controllers or in the PMS controllers; I/O can be mixed in PMS cabinets or placed in dedicated PFC cabinets in the main switchboard.
  • In retrofits, some sensors and signal transducers may need to be added.

Monitored fault types

  • Over/under voltage
  • Over/under frequency
  • Governor fault
  • AVR/excitation fault
  • Unbalanced reactive power
  • Overload
  • Short circuit
  • Unbalanced phase voltage
  • Voltage distortion / EMC

Applications

DP and other vessels with electrically driven thrusters.
