ULSTEIN Energy Management System (EMS™)
Ulstein energy management system on the X-CONNECT® platform for hybrid and battery-only vessel power systems, with peak shaving, load smoothing, spinning reserve, battery mode and state-of-charge compensation.
Description
The ULSTEIN Energy Management System (EMS™) manages vessel power systems that combine conventional power generation with battery energy storage. Built on the X-CONNECT® platform, it optimises the use of generators and batteries to minimise fuel consumption while ensuring power grid stability and safe operation, on small and large vessels with simple or complex power systems.
Key benefits
- Full control over hybrid power systems from the X-CONNECT® user interface
- Optimal use of power generation and energy storage to reduce fuel consumption
- Flexible and scalable with regard to power sources
- Energy storage as a backup power source for increased safety
- Reduced equipment wear and local particle pollution
- Meets varying customer and class society requirements; flexible topology minimises installation space and hardware
Operating modes
- Peak shaving – batteries cover load peaks, relieving generators and diesel engines; can run together with spinning reserve
- Load smoothing – batteries relieve variations around the average load, used where the power system has large hysteresis
- Spinning reserve – connected battery instantly supplies power if a generator fails; suited to DP vessels where closed-bus operation is allowed
- Battery mode – battery as the vessel's power source, e.g. in emission-restricted areas, short ferry crossings, harbours or aquaculture service operations
- Charge/discharge, idle and offline modes – manual control of battery connection to the grid
- State of Charge (SOC) compensation – load levelling to keep the required power available for spinning reserve
Integration
- Works with hybrid and battery-only power systems
- Integrates and synchronises with ULSTEIN PMS™, switchboard cells, battery converters and battery management systems
- Controls battery connection to the ship grid or shore power
