Autonav Rudder Roll Stabilization Systems

Autonav Rudder Roll Stabilization (RRS) uses the vessel's rudders to steer and counter roll simultaneously, removing the need for roll fins; developed with the National Research Council of Canada.

Description

Autonav Rudder Roll Stabilization (RRS) uses the vessel's rudders to steer and counter roll at the same time, eliminating separate roll fins and the cross-axis coupling that pulls a vessel off heading when fins counter roll. The high duty cycle requires very fast rudder movement and robust steering gear, which are inherent in Autonav rotary vane actuators and pump sets. RRS was developed in cooperation with the Canadian National Research Council.

How it works

  • Low-frequency rudder motions control heading
  • High-frequency rudder motions reduce roll
  • Low- and high-frequency corrections are independent under optimal control
  • Control systems minimise cross-axis coupling between steering and roll
  • Exploits the non-minimum phase behaviour of rudders: roll responds faster than yaw to rudder input
