Wärtsilä Methane Slip Reduction Upgrades

Wrtsil

Upgrades for Wärtsilä 20DF, 34DF, 46FDF and 50DF dual-fuel engines that cut methane slip by up to 65%, plus NextDF technology and Spark Gas conversion for 50DF engines.

Description

Wärtsilä methane slip reduction upgrades reduce the unburned methane emitted by LNG-fuelled dual-fuel engines. A quick-to-install upgrade on existing engines can cut methane slip by up to 65%, depending on engine type and load.

Engines covered

  • Wärtsilä 20DF
  • Wärtsilä 34DF
  • Wärtsilä 46FDF
  • Wärtsilä 50DF

Related solutions

  • NextDF for Wärtsilä 31DF and 25DF engines: maintains stable combustion at a set target independently of volumetric efficiency, fuel quality, charge air temperature and pressure, significantly reducing hydrocarbon emissions. Wärtsilä's modern dual-fuel engines achieve methane slip below the FuelEU Maritime default of 3.1% of fuel use.
  • Spark Gas Conversion for Wärtsilä 50DF: replaces pilot fuel ignition with spark-ignited pure gas operation, giving 75% methane slip reduction and up to 4.6% fuel savings at 50% load.
  • Hybrid solutions: combining engines with batteries; compared with an LNG carrier using a low-pressure 2-stroke solution, a modern hybrid electric system can deliver a 20%+ reduction in methane slip.

Regulatory context

Methane slip increases costs under the EU ETS (ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports), where methane is converted to CO₂-equivalent, and under FuelEU Maritime, where it worsens reported GHG intensity.
