Marine propulsion control retrofit

Brand-independent retrofit of obsolete propulsion controls for main engines, bow, tunnel, azimuth and retractable thrusters and hybrid drives, retaining existing components and minimising downtime.

Description

Smart-Ship marine propulsion control retrofit replaces obsolete vessel propulsion controls with a modern control platform while retaining existing engines, thrusters, cabling and drivetrains where technically appropriate. The service is brand-independent and aims for minimal downtime.

Scope

  • System scan: inventory of components, cabling, control positions, logic and documentation
  • Retrofit engineering: replacement plan connecting existing signals and components to new technology
  • New controls: control cabinets, software, HMIs and bridge controls as required
  • Future integrations: data foundation for Track Pilot, JIT sailing, remote control and further digitalisation

Applications

  • Main engines: mechanical or electronic engine controls including RPM, start/stop, alarms and CAN/J1939
  • Bow thrusters: replacement of old bridge panels, levers and relay logic
  • Tunnel thrusters: new control cabinets and interfaces for fixed- and controllable-pitch thrusters
  • Azimuth thrusters: thrust and steering control retrofit retaining suitable hydraulics, drives and feedback signals
  • Retractable thrusters: renewal of deploy/retract logic, interlocks, position feedback and propulsion control
  • Drives & hybrid: integration with variable-frequency drives, electric propulsion, batteries, PMS and new operating modes

Compatibility

Examples of supported propulsion brands include Schottel, Veth Propulsion, Aquamaster, Verhaar Omega and Wärtsilä; engine brands include Scania, Volvo Penta, Caterpillar, MAN, John Deere, Cummins and MTU. Final scope depends on component type, available signals and installation condition.

Process

On-board survey of the existing situation, risks and interfaces; planning of what remains and how the changeover proceeds; prebuild with configuration and testing before the vessel leaves service; then installation, commissioning and sea trial within a controlled yard window.
