Fast Response Cutter Custom Propellers

Custom wake-adapted Michigan Wheel propellers for the USCG 154 ft Fast Response Cutter built by Bollinger, designed with CFD wake analysis for fuel savings, higher top speed and lower vibration.

Description

Michigan Wheel supplies custom wake-adapted propellers for the Fast Response Cutter (FRC), a class of 154 ft patrol boats built by Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, Louisiana for the United States Coast Guard. Each cutter is fitted with a pair of the propellers to reach its 28-knot top speed.

Design

Michigan Wheel worked with Maritime Research Associates and MTU America to perform CFD analysis of the FRC's wake. The resulting propeller has variable pitch, camber and chord distribution along the blades for maximum thrust and efficiency. The propellers are produced by high-quality casting and precision CNC machining; production began in 2012.

Vessel data

  • Length: 154 ft
  • Displacement: 353 long tons
  • Speed: 28 knots

Results

  • Significant estimated annual fuel savings versus commercial off-the-shelf propellers
  • Flank speed estimated to increase by well over 1 knot
  • Pressure pulse amplitude causing noise and vibration estimated to decrease by 50% at flank speed
