Description

The J-Prop Saildrive Feathering Propeller (SBD) is a feathering propeller for saildrive installations, tested and approved by Yanmar for its saildrive engines and available for engines from 8 to 110 HP. It arrives fully assembled, fits on the shaft like a conventional propeller, and the pitch is then set to suit the installation. J-Prop was developed in the late 1980s and patented in the US in 1991 (Patent #5232345).

  • No drilling required for installation
  • Replaceable shock-absorbing rubber rings absorb shock to the saildrive when engaging gear
  • Fail-safe: remains engaged with no loss of power if damaged; secured by splines and conical clamps
  • Helical (continuously engaged) gears keep all blades at identical pitch with low wear
  • Stainless steel and aluminium-bronze alloy components chosen per part to reduce wear and corrosion
  • Elliptical blades give equal thrust ahead and astern and low drag when feathered

Pitch adjustment

Pitch is set by a differentially geared mechanism: the internal stop in the adjustable tail-cone limits planetary gear rotation. With the blades feathered, the ogival nose is pulled out, turned toward the R or L side (per engine rotation) to the notch for the desired pitch, and released so it seats firmly against the propeller body.
