About

WEG was founded on 16 September 1961 in Jaraguá do Sul, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, by Werner Ricardo Voigt, Eggon João da Silva and Geraldo Werninghaus: an electrician, an administrator and a mechanic. The company started as Eletromotores Jaraguá and was later renamed WEG after the initials of the three founders.

The company first produced electric motors. From the 1980s it expanded into electrical and electronic components, industrial automation products, power and distribution transformers, liquid and powder coatings and electrical insulating varnishes, and became a supplier of complete industrial electrical systems.

In the United States the group operates through WEG Electric Corp., with headquarters in Duluth, Georgia. Marine is one of the market segments served alongside oil & gas, energy, mining and water.
